Additional Resources

Hawaii / Kauai

Everyone coming to Kauai for Bowen Work School flies into Lihue, corresponding to 5:00 if Kauai were a clock. Most tourists head south and west; we go north to 3:00, then head inland alongside the Waialua River to Magic Sunrise Retreat Center (www.magicsunrisehawaii.com). Fabienne, originally from Switzerland, runs the center. Island cars can be rented at the local rent-a-wreck; traditional cars can be rented at the airport. Very reasonable rates can be had for rooms at the center, or at a nearby bed and breakfast while you are attending Bowen Work School.

Hula Lessons

What is cool in Kauai? For $20 you can paddle for two weeks with the Hanalei Civic Canoe Club: training with the women’s or men’s outrigger team, surfing down wave faces…Hiking down the NaPali Coast’s Kalalau Trail two miles to where the Hanakapiai River empties into the Pacific, then two miles upriver to Hanakapiai Falls...

Hanakapiai Waterfall                               Snorkeling at Tunnels Beach

…Kayaking up the Waialua River, parking your kayak, then stumbling around the trails to Secret Waterfall and the Green Room (a vine-defined and blooming amphitheater, with hobbit-sized back and front entrances)… Taking surf lessons from one of our Bowen students… Shopping at various farmers’ markets along the north shore for the most beautiful and freshest produce – and then cooking what you’ve bought…Fresh island fish and grass-fed Kauai-grown beef...

Ke'e beach at the end of the road

…Exploring the varied beaches for atmosphere and swimmability…(Ke’e Beach at the end of the road, at the beginning of the NaPali Coast: perfect for swimming early mornings before the relative masses assemble, and while the reef thwarts the tide...

Tunnels Beach

...Tunnels Beach, for great snorkeling and swimming; Secret Beach: expect quite a calf workout when walking to the end of what is the only nude beach...

Anini Beach

...Anini: reef protected and shallow …Hanalei Bay: with the famous by Bali Hai view...
