Hawaii: Oahu / Honolulu

Taking a Bowen Work class in Honolulu combines the best of the big city with the beach scene. We have always taught in the Waikiki area, where you can get your Starbucks fix in the morning, walk the beach at sunrise, and still make class on time. In the evenings, after a short swim on a very benign beach, a million restaurants await your choice. You can also walk the beach at dark, where beach-front hotel after hotel beckon you with music, food, and cocktails on their outside patios.

For our day off, everyone told us “you’ve got to go to the north shore, that’s the best on the island.” We went, aiming to swim, laze about, picnic….

That north shore, though, is not reef protected: the waves dump right at shoreline, and we watched many tourists being trashed in front of our eyes. We did find hanging out at Pipeline fascinating, with the big-wave surfers gliding down wave faces, turning and catching air as they exploded off the crests.

We worked our way around the island to the windward side, and lo! there were our protected bays. More of a local side of the island: nothing to buy, no stores you would recognize. But the water was beautiful and calm, the crowds of the north shore thankfully not in evidence.

Kathy Oshiro is our local sponsor for Bowen Work School in Honolulu. She can be reached with questions about one thing or another at meimeiosh@hawaii.rr.com;  she can occasionally be talked into teaching hula lessons after class, even to haoles.
